- Translate between numbers and words
Translating numbers to their word equivalents and vice versa is an essential skill that helps us understand and communicate numerical information more effectively. Whether you are dealing with small or large numbers, being able to convert between numerical and written representations is a valuable skill in various fields, including mathematics, finance, computer science, and everyday life.
Count to Ten
The following are the numbers between [latex]0[/latex] and [latex]9[/latex] and how the numbers are spelled in the English language. This is called the ones place.
- [latex]0[/latex] – Zero
- [latex]1[/latex] – One
- [latex]2[/latex] – Two
- [latex]3[/latex] – Three
- [latex]4[/latex] – Four
- [latex]5[/latex] – Five
- [latex]6[/latex] – Six
- [latex]7[/latex] – Seven
- [latex]8[/latex] – Eight
- [latex]9[/latex] – Nine
Count by Tens
Similarly to the numbers from 0 to 9, we can count by tens. The following are a list of numbers counting by [latex]10[/latex] from [latex]0[/latex] to [latex]100[/latex] and how they are spelled in the English language. This is called the tens place.
- [latex]0[/latex] – Zero
- [latex]10[/latex] – Ten
- [latex]20[/latex] – Twenty
- [latex]30[/latex] – Thirty
- [latex]40[/latex] – Forty
- [latex]50[/latex] – Fifty
- [latex]60[/latex] – Sixty
- [latex]70[/latex] – Seventy
- [latex]80[/latex] – Eighty
- [latex]90[/latex] – Ninety
- [latex]100[/latex] – One hundred
Count by Hundreds
We can also count by hundreds. The following are a list of numbers counting by [latex]100[/latex] from [latex]0[/latex] to [latex]1,000[/latex] and how they are spelled in the English language. This is called the hundreds place.
- [latex]0[/latex] – Zero
- [latex]100[/latex] – One hundred
- [latex]200[/latex] – Two hundred
- [latex]300[/latex] – Three hundred
- [latex]400[/latex] – Four hundred
- [latex]500[/latex] – Five hundred
- [latex]600[/latex] – Six hundred
- [latex]700[/latex] – Seven hundred
- [latex]800[/latex] – Eight hundred
- [latex]900[/latex] – Nine hundred
- [latex]1,000[/latex] – One thousand
Count by Thousands
After understanding the hundreds place, we can move on to the thousands. The following are a list of numbers counting by [latex]1,000[/latex] from [latex]1,000[/latex] to [latex]10,000[/latex]. This is called the thousands place. Here’s how these numbers are spelled in English:
- [latex]1,000[/latex] – One thousand
- [latex]2,000[/latex] – Two thousand
- [latex]3,000[/latex] – Three thousand
- [latex]4,000[/latex] – Four thousand
- [latex]5,000[/latex] – Five thousand
- [latex]6,000[/latex] – Six thousand
- [latex]7,000[/latex] – Seven thousand
- [latex]8,000[/latex] – Eight thousand
- [latex]9,000[/latex] – Nine thousand
- [latex]10,000[/latex] – Ten thousand
Combining Places
Numbers between these thousands can be formed by combining the thousands place with the hundreds, tens, and ones places you’ve already covered. For example:
- [latex]1,234[/latex] – One thousand two hundred thirty-four
- [latex]2,345[/latex]– Two thousand three hundred forty-five
- [latex]5,678[/latex] – Five thousand six hundred seventy-eight
- [latex]7,890[/latex] – Seven thousand eight hundred ninety
- [latex]9,101[/latex] – Nine thousand one hundred one
Numbers go on forever to infinity, but for this lesson we are only going to focus on the numbers between [latex]0[/latex] and [latex]10,000[/latex].
With this information, let’s try and convert numbers to words.
Now lets practicing converting from the words to numbers.
