Module 9: Background You’ll Need 4

  • Convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Parts of the Whole

In many types of research, we work with data that can be expressed with simple “yes” or “no” answers. Do you support the new law proposed in Congress? Does that patient have diabetes? Do cars come equipped with automatic braking? When we report the number of “yes” responses as a portion of the population or sample, we use a proportion.

Here’s how to convert decimals and fractions to percentages:

  1. Write the decimal as a fraction.
  2. If the denominator of the fraction is not [latex]100[/latex], rewrite it as an equivalent fraction with a denominator of [latex]100[/latex].
  3. Write this new ratio as a percent, since anything over [latex]100[/latex] is that percent.

Example: [latex]0.8 = \dfrac{8}{10}=\dfrac{4}{5}=\dfrac{80}{100}=80\%[/latex]
