Sometimes the obstacle isn\u2019t the problem itself\u2014it\u2019s the way we <em data-start=\"328\" data-end=\"335\">think<\/em> about the problem. Psychologists have identified several mental habits that make it harder to generate creative or effective solutions.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"473\" data-end=\"695\">Albert Einstein famously said, <em data-start=\"504\" data-end=\"594\">\u201cInsanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.\u201d <\/em>This quote captures a common obstacle: getting \u201cstuck\u201d using an old solution that no longer works.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"697\" data-end=\"956\">Imagine standing in a room with four doorways. The one you usually use is suddenly locked, but you keep tugging on it anyway\u2014even though the other three doors are wide open. The solution is obvious from the outside, but in the moment, familiarity can trap us.<\/p>\r\n<section class=\"textbox keyTakeaway\">\r\n<h3>mental set<\/h3>\r\n<p>A <strong>mental set<\/strong> is where you persist in approaching a problem in a way that has worked in the past but is clearly not working now.<\/p>\r\n<\/section>\r\n<p data-start=\"1123\" data-end=\"1447\">Mental sets can be helpful because familiar solutions save time. But they can also block creativity and keep you from seeing alternatives. An explosion in a module of the spacecraft damaged multiple systems. The astronauts were in danger of being poisoned by rising levels of carbon dioxide because of problems with the carbon dioxide filters.
