Three of these systems\u2014the <strong data-start=\"684\" data-end=\"704\">vestibular sense<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"706\" data-end=\"724\">proprioception<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"730\" data-end=\"745\">kinesthesia<\/strong>\u2014provide your brain with constant feedback about motion, balance, and body position.<\/p>\r\n<h3 data-start=\"836\" data-end=\"889\"><strong data-start=\"840\" data-end=\"889\">The Vestibular Sense: Balance and Orientation<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>The <strong>vestibular sense<\/strong> (also known as the vestibular system) contributes to our ability to maintain balance and body posture. As Figure 1 shows, the major sensory organs (<strong>utricle, saccule, and the three semicircular canals<\/strong>) of this system are located next to the cochlea in the inner ear.<\/p>\r\n<p>The vestibular organs are fluid-filled and have hair cells, similar to the ones found in the auditory system, which respond to movement of the head and gravitational forces. When these hair cells are stimulated, they send signals to the brain via the vestibular nerve. It provides <strong data-start=\"2285\" data-end=\"2308\">cognitive awareness<\/strong> of your body\u2019s orientation in space.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"2349\" data-end=\"2733\">Proprioceptive information comes from specialized receptors in muscles, tendons, joints, and skin that respond to stretch, pressure, and tension (Lackner &amp; DiZio, 2005; Proske, 2006; Proske &amp; Gandevia, 2012). These signals travel through the spinal cord to the cerebellum and various cortical regions, which process and integrate them with visual and vestibular input.<\/p>\r\n<h3 data-start=\"2874\" data-end=\"2911\"><strong data-start=\"2878\" data-end=\"2911\">Kinesthesia: Sensing Movement<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p data-start=\"2913\" data-end=\"3170\">While proprioception helps you know <em data-start=\"2949\" data-end=\"2956\">where<\/em> your body parts are, <strong data-start=\"2978\" data-end=\"2993\">kinesthesia<\/strong> helps you sense <em data-start=\"3010\" data-end=\"3032\">how they are moving. <\/em>It involves detecting changes in muscle tension, speed, and direction of movement, giving rise to the sensation of motion itself.<\/p>\r\n<p data-start=\"3172\" data-end=\"3412\">Kinesthesia is key to activities that require timing and coordination\u2014like typing, dancing, or swinging a golf club.
