Inferences and Conclusions: Background You’ll Need

Draw inferences and conclusions from your reading

Drawing inferences and conclusions from a nonfiction passage involves using the information presented in the text to make a judgment or come to a logical interpretation. Here are some steps to follow when drawing inferences and conclusions:

  1. Read the text carefully: Before you can draw conclusions, you need to have a full understanding of the information presented in the passage.
  2. Understand the author’s purpose: Ask yourself questions like: What is the author trying to communicate? What is their point of view? What is their tone–are they being serious or sarcastic?
  3. Look for evidence: Look for facts, statistics, and other evidence that can help you to draw logical conclusions.
  4. Formulate your conclusion: Once you have gathered all the relevant information and considered the context, you can formulate your conclusion. This should be based on logical reasoning and supported by evidence from the text.
Be on the lookout for errors in reasoning that can undermine the argument or lead to a false conclusion.
