Trends in IT

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a groundbreaking trend in information technology, revolutionizing the way businesses operate. AI refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines, enabling them to learn, reason, and make decisions independently. In business, AI is transforming various sectors, including customer service, supply chain management, and data analysis. AI-powered chatbots provide personalized and efficient customer support, while machine learning algorithms optimize inventory management and predict demand patterns. Generative AI can be used to create text, images, videos, and audio that can be indistinguishable from human-made content. Large language model ChatGPT and graphics creation tool DALL-E, both produced by OpenAI, have generated a great deal of popular interest in AI.

In 2023, IBM CEO, Arvind Krishna, said that IBM planned to use AI to automate tasks and eliminate approximately 7,800 jobs over the next 5 years.[1] In 2020, the World Economic Forum already predicted a loss of 85 million jobs worldwide by 2025 due to the adoption of technologies such as AI, but the same report also predicted that 97 million new roles.[2] However, the new jobs that are created are likely to be high-skilled technology roles while the jobs eliminated are lower skilled roles involving information management that can be automated such as data entry, secretarial tasks, and payroll functions.[3]

Augmented Analytics[4]

Augmented analytics uses AI and machine learning to enhance the analysis of large amounts of data. It aims to combine human intuition and expertise with advanced algorithms to automate data preparation, exploration, and analysis. Augmented analytics tools assist businesses in uncovering hidden insights, identifying trends, and making decisions based on big data more efficiently and accurately. By automating tedious and time-consuming tasks, such as organizing and visualizing data, augmented analytics allows business professionals to focus on strategic analysis and interpretation. It enables a broader range of users, including those without a strong technical background, to use the power of data and extract meaningful business insights.

Ethical Hacking[5]

Ethical hacking, also known as penetration testing, has gained prominence as a critical component of cybersecurity. Ethical hackers are professionals who are hired by businesses to identify vulnerabilities in computer systems, networks, and applications to prevent unauthorized access and protect sensitive information. Ethical hackers use the same techniques as malicious hackers but ethical hackers have the explicit permission of the system owners. Ethical hacking helps organizations uncover weaknesses and improve defenses by identifying information that hackers would most want to access, determine what hackers could do with the information they could access, determine how many people would notice a malicious hack, and figure out the best way to fix vulnerabilities.

Digital Forensics

Digital evidence taken from an individual’s computer or corporate network—web pages, pictures, documents, and e-mails are part of a field called digital forensics. Digital forensics software safeguards electronic evidence used in investigations by creating a duplicate of a hard drive that an investigator can search by keyword, file type, or access date.

But digital sleuthing is not limited to law enforcement. Companies such as WalmartTarget, and American Express have their own secret in-house digital forensics teams. And what if you’re in New York and need to seize a hard drive in Hong Kong? No problem. Over 75 members of the Fortune 500 now use technology that allows them to search hard drives remotely over their corporate networks. Digital forensics makes it possible to track down those who steal corporate data and intellectual property. However, sophisticated hackers could use the same tools to access corporate networks and individual computers and the victims would not even know it was happening.
