Show Your Skills

Employers want applicants to have critical thinking skills. One way they evaluate yours is by asking what are known as behavioral interview questions when you are interviewed for a job. How would you answer the following questions?[1]

  • Describe a time that you hade to quickly make a decision.
  • What would you do if you noticed that your supervisor made a mistake in a report or presentation?
  • Describe the most difficult decision that you had to make at work.
  • How would you respond if a co-worker shared a new idea with you?
  • How would you solve a disagreement between members of your team?
  • Describe a time when you anticipated that something could go wrong and what you did to avoid that possibility.
  • What do you do when you need to make a decision but you lack some information?

Maximize Opportunities in College

  • Plan ahead and take a class that involves a significant project such as a capstone course. Sometimes this can be a requirement for your major. If it’s not, taking a capstone course or completing a capstone project, one that demonstrates putting together and applying the knowledge you have learned, is a great talking point to bring up in interviews with potential employers.
  • Enter a contest related to business. Sometimes schools or local organization sponsor contests where you pitch a product or service that solves a problem. Coming up with the solution shows off your critical thinking skills. Alternatively, see if your school has a chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (also known as Phi Beta Lambda). This is an organization that helps students prepare for careers in business and they also run competitions where you can use your critical thinking skills. If your school doesn’t have a chapter, use your critical thinking skills and figure out how you can start one!
