Supporting Inferences with Analytical Thinking

You already know what an inference is—it’s the skill of reading between the lines, using clues in a text and your background knowledge to figure out something that isn’t directly stated. What you might not have practiced as much is explaining how you got there.

What evidence in the text pointed you in that direction? What assumptions or prior knowledge filled in the gap? The more you understand why you made an inference, the more confidently you can support your ideas with textual evidence.
