This is called the commutative property of vector addition.

Notice that the three vectors [latex]\\mathbf{v}[/latex], [latex]\\mathbf{w}[/latex], and [latex]\\mathbf{v} + \\mathbf{w}[/latex] form a triangle. From basic geometry, the length of any side of a triangle must be less than or equal to the sum of the other two sides. This gives us the triangle inequality:

[latex]||\\mathbf{v} + \\mathbf{w}|| \\leq ||\\mathbf{v}|| + ||\\mathbf{w}||[/latex]

The only time we get equality is when [latex]\\mathbf{v}[/latex] and [latex]\\mathbf{w}[/latex] point in exactly the same direction.

Parallelogram Method

An alternative approach places both vectors at the same initial point, then draws a parallelogram using the vectors as adjacent sides. The diagonal of the parallelogram represents the vector sum.

Both methods give identical results—use whichever seems clearer for your problem.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-680 size-full" src="https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/courses-images/wp-content/uploads/sites/5667/2021/08/17185111/2-1-4.jpeg" alt="This image has two figures.
