Additionally, the concept of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.copyright.gov\/title17\/92chap1.html#107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fair use<\/a> allows the use of an image \"for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research.\u201d If your work falls into one of those categories, you\u2019re safe. Otherwise, your use of the image is considered a violation of copyright law.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Royalty-Free Images<\/h3>\r\n<p>A <strong>royalty<\/strong> is a payment made to the copyright owner for each use that doesn't fall under the fair use exception. There are <strong>royalty-free<\/strong> sources of images, videos, and other visual media out there. However, \u201croyalty-free\u201d doesn\u2019t necessarily mean \"without cost.\" On the contrary, sites like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Getty Images<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shutterstock<\/a> often charge licensing fees and even instructions on how to give the original artist credit for his or her work. But once that transaction is complete, the visual media is yours to use as you wish. There\u2019s no need to pay royalties for copies sold or each time you use the image.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Open Images<\/h3>\r\n<p>There are plenty of open sources of images that can be used free of charge. Some authors and artists have released their works under an open license. This means their works are free to use, modify, and share.<\/p>\r\n<p>Many of them work with a Creative Commons license. <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Creative Commons<\/a> is a US not-for-profit organization that\u2019s devoted to expanding the range of creative works available to the general public, and it does so by providing copyright licenses to creators, allowing them to express which rights they want to reserve and which they waive, or release. These licenses replace individual negotiations between the artist and the user.<\/p>\r\n<p>In many cases, images covered by the Creative Commons license can be used free of charge if you simply credit the artist. This might mean captioning your photo with \u201cPhotographer's Name\/Getty Images\u201d or \u201cCredit: Photographer's Name.\u201d You can learn more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/share-your-work\/licensing-types-examples\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">different Creative Commons Licenses on their site<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<h4>Finding Open Images<\/h4>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pixabay<\/a>: There are over a million free stock photos to choose from on this site, all high quality and high resolution.<\/li>\r\n\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unsplash<\/a>: This site has a great selection of business photos to choose from.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/explore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flickr<\/a>: There\u2019s a section of free-use photos here as well.
