We borrow the process largely from social science, where the focus is answering a question or gaining insight into human affairs. The general research process is usually as follows:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li>Determine a problem and define a question to answer.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Find general background information about your problem\/question.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Develop a research strategy to address any data, information, or knowledge gaps. Lastly, for 2023, the movie &quot;Barbie&quot; led the global box office with $1,446 million in revenue. We may categorize data in the following manner:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Internal\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Employee headcount<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Employee demographics (e.g., gender, ethnicity, education)<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Financials (e.g., profit)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n\t<li>External\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Number of vendors used<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Number of clients in a company\u2019s book of business<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Size of the industry (e.g. number of companies, total sales)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Data can also be categorized as qualitative or quantitative.<\/p>\r\n<section class=\"textbox keyTakeaway\">\r\n<h3>qualitative vs. quantitative data<\/h3>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li>Qualitative data are generally non-numeric and require context, time, or variance to have meaning or utility. (e.g. temperature, prices, amount of inventory)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/section>\r\n<p>Both types of data are useful for business report writing. Usually, a report will feature as much hard, or quantitative data, as possible. Most organizations keep a variety of internal quantitative data.<\/p>\r\n<p>Qualitative data, such as stories, case studies, or descriptions of processes or events, are also very useful and provide context. A good report will likely have both types of data, and a good report writer will use both types of data to build a picture of information for their readers.<\/p>\r\n<section class=\"textbox linkToLearning\">\r\n<h3>Form 10-K<\/h3>\r\n<p>A common report required of all [pb_glossary id=\"2170\"]publicly traded companies[\/pb_glossary] is the 10-K. This is an annual report that all public companies in the US have to file with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). For example, you can take a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/d18rn0p25nwr6d.cloudfront.net\/CIK-0001506293\/7d9f1edb-1106-4267-a056-fcb1c304ca79.pdf\">Pinterest's Form 10-K<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>The table of contents on page 2 illustrates common types of data used.
